20 million in funding for broadband expansion
Network access of at least 50 Mbit/s for underserved neighbourhoods
The city of Chemnitz today received approval for funding for broadband expansion. This afternoon in Berlin, Federal Transport Minister Alexander Dobrindt handed over the notification for
20.37 million euros to Mayor Barbara Ludwig in Berlin this afternoon.
The funds come from a federal funding programme for underserved areas with less than 30 Mbit/s.
"An efficient broadband network is of great importance for the city as a residential and business location. It is not only the citizens who benefit from this, but above all the companies that are already based in Chemnitz or want to set up here. I am therefore very pleased about the federal funding," said Lord Mayor Barbara Ludwig.
The funding is to be used for the expansion of high-speed Internet with broadband availability of at least 50 Mbit/s. This means that underserved areas in the northern districts of Chemnitz (Altendorf, Borna-Heinersdorf, Glösa-Draisdorf, Fürth, Rabenstein, Rottluff, Schloßchemnitz, Schönau, Stelzendorf, Wittgensdorf) and in Chemnitz South (Adelsberg, Bernsdorf, Einsiedel, Erfenschlag, Euba, Gablenz, Harthau, Hilbersdorf, Klaffenbach, Kleinolbersdorf-AH, Markersdorf, Reichenhain, Yorckgebiet) will receive corresponding network access.
The expansion timeframe will be around two years. The exact order of the city districts has not yet been determined.
