19th Chemnitz Museum Night

In the festive year 2018, which is all about the city's anniversary "875 years of Chemnitz", the Chemnitz Museum Night will set its very own accents as a major joint project of the city's museums and art landscape on Saturday, 5 May, from 6 pm to 1 am, at 29 locations.

In its anniversary year, "The special offer" is dedicated specifically to the age group of children and young people as museum visitors of the present and future. On two different discovery tours, children with their families or young people with their friends can go in search of well-known personalities who have left their mark in Chemnitz or Karl-Marx-Stadt at 14 different locations.

The best way to search for traces is with the help of the discovery map. On the one hand, it serves as a compass for selecting the locations and at the same time, with its questions about the people you are looking for, as a collection card for the solutions. Exciting activities and hands-on offers at various stations in the museums and institutions help in the search for solutions and provide young and old urban explorers with interesting facts about the lives of the people they are looking for or their achievements. We don't want to give too much away: Naturalists, former mayors, sportsmen and artists, for example, can be recognised. The earliest traces lead to a person who lived around 30,000 years ago.

Discovery cards are available from the museums and institutions, the tourist information centre and the CVAG mobility centre.

The participating museums and institutions have also geared their programmes mainly to topics related to the city's history. One focus is Karl Marx, whose 200th birthday is on 5 May 2018. For the Chemnitz Industrial Museum, this is an occasion to commemorate the important 19th century philosopher with literary and musical programme contributions as well as hands-on activities. Exhibitions in the Chemnitz City Archive and in the Weise Gallery are dedicated to Karl Marx as the namesake of our city. In the Weise Gallery, personal loans from Chemnitz residents will be exhibited, which were submitted following a call by the city of Chemnitz.

In the Schloßbergmuseum Chemnitz , the medieval beginnings of Chemnitz are explored in exciting ways, e.g. through the last abbot of the Benedictine monastery in Chemnitz, games and hands-on activities from the age of chivalry. All archaeological finds from Chemnitz can be viewed in the smac under the title "875 years of Chemnitz: Chemnitz finds in the smac". There is also a brochure with background information on the artefacts.

In the TIETZ, you will encounter Georgius Agricola as a former mayor and polymath, the first director of the König-Albert Museum, Johann Traugott Sterzel, and valuable historical writings on the discovery tour through Chemnitz's city history. There are also traces of the TIETZ family, who had the building constructed, as well as the "Herr der Zacken", a well-known Chemnitz stamp designer.

Famous industrialists and their inventions have made the city of Chemnitz famous worldwide. In the city archives, the founders of the Wanderer-Werke, Winklhofer and Jaenicke, are introduced and in the railway area in Ebersdorf, visitors learn why Richard Hartmann is called the "Saxon locomotive king". The programme at the German Games Museum revolves around the fully synthetic detergent Fewa, its inventor Heinrich Gottlob Bertsch and the advertising icon "Johanna".

If you want to find out more about the post-modern "Flöha" streamlined bus, you should take advantage of the themed tours between smac and the Chemnitz Tram Museum. It is also worth stopping off at the Museum of Saxon Vehicles. There, Chemnitz motorsport history takes centre stage.

Those interested in the art traditions of Chemnitz and important representatives of Expressionism, avant-garde movements, Realism or the Bauhaus are spoilt for choice. You can choose from Karl Schmidt-Rottluff and Carlfriedrich Clauß in the Chemnitz Art Collections on Theaterplatz, Otto Dix in the Gunzenhauser Museum and Marianne Brandt in the Marianne Brandt House.

A broad spectrum of contemporary art awaits those interested in art in the project space of the Chemnitz Artists' Association, in the artEck gallery, in Weltecho, in the gallery and archive of the Laterne art association and in GalerieOben. The Klaffenbach moated castle presents art and fashion.

The Red Tower, the oldest building in Chemnitz, is open to visitors. The exhibition "Große Chemnitzer" ("Great Chemnitzers") will be shown on the "denk-mal!" panels in the footpath.

If you want to experience Chemnitz's school history up close and see the world's largest school class book, you should include the Ebersdorf School Museum as a stop on your discovery tour.

Traces of the recent past: the Lern- und Gedenkort Kaßberg-Gefängnis e. V. association opens the gates of the former prison on the Kaßberg again on Museum Night and provides insights into the moving history behind the prison walls. Documents on the "ČSSR problem" and the events of the "Prague Spring" in 1968 will be presented in the Chemnitz branch of the Stasi document authority.

Chemnitz Museum Night is a joint project that has been organised by municipal, association-owned and private museums, cultural institutions and galleries since 2000 and is coordinated and organised by the city's cultural department.

Special service for people with disabilities:
The programme brochure provides visitors with information on disabled access to the participating museums and institutions for visitors with mobility impairments as well as information on offers for people with sensory impairments. There will be joint guided tours for hearing and deaf people in the Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz and the TIETZ.

CVAG shuttle service - on tour by bus and train:
As in previous years, the participating museums and institutions can once again be reached by bus and train on CVAG's special shuttle tours in addition to regular public transport services. The admission ticket is also valid as a travel ticket.

Ticket service:
The Museum Night ticket is available at a price of 8 euros, concessions 5 euros and is also valid as a travel ticket. Admission is free for children and young people up to the age of 18. For them, the Entdeckerkarte is valid as a ticket. Advance ticket sales start on 23 April 2018. Tickets and Discovery Cards are available at the advance booking offices of the Tourist Information Office and the CVAG Mobility Centre as well as at the museums and facilities of the main programme during opening hours and at the box offices on the day of the event.
