120 years of electric trams
Series of events organised by the city archive on 27 March in the Volksbank building
The next event "The City Archive presents" will take place in cooperation with the Chemnitz History Society on Thursday, 27 March, 6 p.m., in the Volksbank Chemnitz building (headquarters: Innere Klosterstraße 15, 09111 Chemnitz). On the topic of "120 years of electric trams in Chemnitz. Beginnings, developments, projects" will be presented by the Chemnitz transport historian Dipl.-Ing. Heiner Matthes, who is well-known for his publications.
Admission to the lecture is free.
Information on the lecture: The lecture will focus in particular on the reasons for the introduction of electric railway operation in the Saxon industrial metropolis and the lengthy process for the construction of the tram and line network 120 years ago and afterwards. Visitors will also learn more about the necessity of building a new tramway in our city and the realisation of this gigantic project over the past 55 years. Also of interest are the unrealised railway construction projects during the more than 120 years of tram history.
The lecture will focus on the following aspects: Construction of the basic network and its completion due to the interaction of urban development and transport development (1893 - 1914); transport in times of economic hardship (1914 - 1923); revitalisation of the economy and transport until the economic crisis and the decline during the Nazi era (1924 - 1945); painstaking reconstruction after 1945; narrow gauge and standard gauge railway as important partners in the revitalised industrial city (1950 - 1990); the tramway in the years after 1990 with a concluding look at future challenges.
