1143 or 1165? The city anniversary of Chemnitz
Lecture to kick off the joint project on the occasion of the city's 875th anniversary on 10 January, 6 p.m. in the city archive
Chemnitz is celebrating its 875th anniversary this year. A joint project by the Chemnitz History Society, the Chemnitz Saxon Industrial Museum, the Schloßberg Museum, the Chemnitz State Museum of Archaeology and the Chemnitz City Archive entitled "875 years of history in twelve months" is honouring the city's history.
The kick-off event will take place next Wednesday, 10 January at 6 pm in the Chemnitz City Archive. Gabriele Viertel, former director of the city archive for many years, will speak on the topic "1143 or 1165? The city anniversary of Chemnitz". Admission is free.
She will address questions about the first documentary mention of Chemnitz and its further development as well as questions about the celebrations of the city's anniversary in the past. A place called Chemnitz was first mentioned in a document from 1143. In 1893, a city anniversary was celebrated for the first time with reference to this. An 800th anniversary was celebrated in 1965. Gabriele Viertel shows the motives behind this. The archaeological excavations in the 1990s will also be covered, as will the numerous works of literature that are now available on these issues.
