100 years of Soroptimist International
Equal opportunities officer supports the founding of a Chemnitz group
Soroptimist International (SI) is one of the world's largest service organisations of working women with a socio-political commitment. Soroptimists are committed locally, nationally and internationally to human rights, international understanding and the advancement of women and girls.
The service organisation was founded in California in 1921. Soroptimist International now exists in 118 countries worldwide with around 70,000 members in over 2,900 clubs. As a non-governmental organisation (NGO), SI has general consultative status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations and has representatives at numerous UN sub-organisations. There are currently 223 clubs in Germany with over 6,700 members. Thanks to the voluntary commitment of Soroptimists, around 1.5 million euros flow into social projects at home and abroad every year.
All these figures are reason enough to celebrate SI's 100th birthday in style. Unfortunately, there is currently no club in Chemnitz that can join in the celebrations. Some women in Chemnitz are convinced that it is time to found a club here again. The project is supported by the Equal Opportunities Officer Pia Hamann. Interested women are cordially invited to get in touch at the following e-mail address: interesseSIchemnitz(at)gmail.com.
A meeting will be organised as soon as circumstances permit, but it is already possible to find out more about the work of Soroptimist International:
To kick off the election year and shortly before International Women's Day, Soroptimist International is hosting a digital salon. Dr Renate Tewaag, current President of SI Germany, will speak with historian Prof. Dr Hedwig Richter on 25 February 2021 on the topic of "Democracy and women - the long road to participation". Registration at www.salonfestival.de
Soroptimist International is also offering a digital programme for Women's Day. The "Würgau-Franconian Switzerland" club invites you to a theatre performance. Texts by Mascha Kaléko will be brought to life in a literary-musical evening entitled "A suitcase full of longing". Registration at soroptimist.wuergau(at)web.de
