100 years of Chemnitz Adult Education Centre

Press invitation for festive event and start of the semester

Chemnitz Adult Education Centre is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. For this reason, a celebratory event will be held on 1 March from 7 p.m. in the TIETZ hall (3rd floor), to which renowned guests from regional politics, associations, course instructors and cooperation partners of the VHS have been invited. The opening words will be delivered by the mayor and board member of the Saxon Adult Education Association for the Saxon Association of Towns and Municipalities, Miko Runkel. Prof. Dr Ulrich Klemm, Managing Director of the Sächsischer Volkshochschulverband e.V., will speak about the development of further education institutions in Saxony. Afterwards, Grit Bochmann, Director of VHS Chemnitz, and Dr Jürgen Nitsche, historian, will present the in-house publication "Auftrag Bildung - Hundert Jahre Volkshochschule Chemnitz".

Following the book presentation, the accompanying exhibition "Auftrag Bildung - Hundert Jahre Volkshochschule Chemnitz" will be opened on the 4th floor. The exhibition shows historical documents of the adult education centre from its founding to the present day. On display are original prints from the city archives, from old VHS curricula from the 1920s to former visitor cards and photographs of the course rooms at the time. The front pages of the programme booklets from 2004 to 2019 are also on display, as are historical advertising posters, such as the 1949 "General advertising poster of the adult education centres in the newly founded GDR". This exhibition will be on display from 2 March until the end of July 2019 during the opening hours of the adult education centre for all interested Chemnitz residents and visitors to the city. The vernissage on 1 March will be accompanied by music.


One week later, on 8 March, from 7 p.m., Peter Sloterdijk will open the 2019 summer semester of the adult education centre as a guest speaker. This semester kick-off event is also the start of the new four-part vision series on the topic of "What kind of society do we want to live in?". As part of this series of special lectures followed by discussion rounds, the well-known philosopher will speak on the topic and read from his latest book "Neue Zeiten und Tage: Notes on the Present".
