10 years of European Local Democracy Week
Events at the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre and the Odradek reading café
The annual European Week of Local Democracy will once again take place from 9 to 15 October 2017. During this Europe-wide week of action, associations in Chemnitz promote participation in the local democratic process and mutual respect for human rights. With this year's motto for the 10th anniversary "Participatory democracy: sharing, proposing, deciding", the Council of Europe wants to encourage citizens of the 47 member states to participate more democratically at local level.
The Chemnitz Adult Education Centre is taking part in the European Week of Local Democracy with two events:
On Tuesday, 10 October at 8 p.m., a moderated round table discussion with the guiding theme "What is democracy?" will be offered at Weltecho. Not only will the most important concepts of democracy and the threats to it be explained in a short input, but all interested parties and experts will be able to participate in the moderated discussion round.
On Wednesday, 11 October at 7 pm, there will be a book presentation in the Tietz event hall. In his book "Gesellschaftsspielchen", author Ronny Blaske attempts to show how football can enrich the community. In favour of diversity and a wealth of movement and against discrimination and violence.
The Odradek reading café is continuing its "Human Rights and Democracy in Europe" series of events to mark the week of action:
On Wednesday 11 October at 8pm, Maria Präkels will read from the book "Als Hitler meine Schnapskirschen aß" (When Hitler ate my brandy cherries), which tells of the time of change in Brandenburg, the collapse of a system and the temporary lack of an order. This will be followed by a round table discussion with Chris Münster.
On Thursday 12 October at 9 pm, there will be a concert by the not quite typical band "Red On und Schweben" from the Bavarian metropolitan province of Nuremberg.
On Friday 13 October at 8 pm, the series of events will conclude with a screening of the film "Girl Power", which tells the story of a female graffiti artist who, despite the dominance of the male players in the scene, makes an important contribution to the graffiti scene.
Also on Friday, 13 October, an exhibition will open at the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre. The Montessori School launched a project to sensitise pupils to the topic of democracy. The children designed symbols and texts with messages about tolerance and democracy. These were used to create clay tablets, which are presented in this exhibition.
