Short description:
The Saxon Railway Museum is the largest fully preserved railway depot for steam locomotives in Germany. Its exhibits vividly illustrate the development of railway transport in the 20th century. The interplay of listed buildings, technical facilities and historic vehicles gives the museum a unique atmosphere.
Two roundhouses with 20-metre turntables and 26 locomotive stands each, facilities for supplying the steam locomotives with fuel, e.g. coaling and sanding systems, water cranes and a workshop with historical machine tools have been preserved.
The interesting vehicle fleet includes steam, diesel and electric locomotives of various types as well as historic passenger and goods wagons. Some of the locomotives were built in the machine factory founded by Richard Hartmann in Chemnitz. A large 600 mm gauge light railway layout with various locomotives and countless carriages as well as several model railways are also part of the museum. For many years, special trips with the museum's own steam locomotive 50 3648 and the museum train through Saxony and Central Germany have been a speciality. Highlights include the annual Heizhausfest at the end of August and the Licht'l trips to the Ore Mountains at Christmas time.
The museum is run by the Sächsisches Eisenbahnmuseum Chemnitz-Hilbersdorf e.V. (Saxon Railway Museum Chemnitz-Hilbersdorf Association), which has around 200 members and has been responsible for maintaining the site and the vehicles since 1990.
