The twinning was established on 6 October 1968.
The non-profit association Partnerschaft Chemnitz - Timbuktu e.V. was founded on 30 November 1999 to support and promote the town twinning.
The association aims to awaken and promote the idea of twinning among the inhabitants and institutions of both cities. Chemnitz residents are informed about everyday life and culture in the twin city of Timbuktu through a wide variety of event formats and sensitised to the other reality of life. The association aims to promote cultural exchange and the development of contacts between the inhabitants of the two cities. Through the work of the association, initiatives close to the citizens and the sustainable realisation of good project ideas are to be activated in the sense of a partnership.

- Thematic lectures, exhibitions, contacts with people with experience, sporting events
- Information and counselling for activities
- Cultural and educational events, readings about or with Malian authors, concerts
- Goals: Youth exchange, reciprocal visits by residents of both cities including the arrangement of host families, support in finding training, internship and study places in the Chemnitz region.
- Promotion of local projects in Timbuktu (expansion of school sponsorships, tree planting campaigns, irrigation using renewable energy)
