The vaults in Kaßberg in Chemnitz are an underground wooden structure of a non-mining character from Hartmannplatz along Fabrikstraße to Reichsstraße, in which beauty, solidarity and care in construction radiate an impressive harmony. The beauty, solidarity and diligence of the construction work radiate an impressive harmony, and which tells of the diligence, ingenuity and tenacity of our forefathers in a special way on three levels.
First mentioned in a document in 1531, the venerable building with its peculiar corridor curvatures, constrictions and extensions served Chemnitz as a natural, huge cold storage room for centuries. The provision of funds by the Federal Labour Office enabled first the FörderZentrum "pro Chemnitz" GmbH, and since 2002 the Chemnitzer Gewölbekeller association, to restore the corridor systems at Fabrikstraße 6 and Pfortensteg and make them accessible to the public.
During a visit to the Chemnitz vaulted cellars, you will learn all about the reasons for their construction and the purpose of a listed building that was to save the lives of tens of thousands of Chemnitz residents hundreds of years after it was built.
