Short description:
The "Chemnitz 1874" beekeepers' association was founded in 1874 as a "beekeepers' association" in Chemnitz and the surrounding area, in line with the general trend at the time.
Over the years, the association has weathered many a storm. During the GDR era, the association belonged to the VKSK Karl-Marx-Stadt Land as the "Beekeepers Karl-Marx-Stadt North" division and at times had over 100 members.
After the political turnaround, the association was founded on 14 June 1990 under the umbrella of the Landesverband Sächsischer Imker e. V., which was also founded in May 1990, in the "Zur Post" restaurant in Chemnitz-Ebersdorf with the new name "Chemnitzer Imkerverein 1874" e. V.. At that time, it had 21 members. Under the conditions of the post-reunification period, the number of members fell to nine.
Giving up was not an option, and the number of members increased steadily, so that the association had 40 members in January 2014. It was pleasing to see that some younger people, including 7 women, had found their way into beekeeping. The average age was 56.6 years, which was optimistic for the continued existence of the association.
This positive trend has continued, so that the beekeeping association reached a special costellation at the beginning of 2020. 56 members with an average age of 56 years (with a spread of 14-84 years), including 14 women.
