Information event on 20 September at the Metropol cinema
Around Dementia Week from 14 September to 22 September 2024, a wide range of events are planned by various stakeholders on the topic of dementia. The aim of the series of events is to educate interested parties, relatives and those affected about the disease, raise public awareness and enable better participation for people diagnosed with dementia.
All events are free of charge.
"Dementia - be human and stay human."
This is the motto of the Dementia Week in Saxony from 20 September to 28 September 2025 in Chemnitz, where various stakeholders are planning a wide range of events on the topic of dementia.
The aim of the series of events is to educate interested parties, relatives and those affected about the disease, raise public awareness and enable better participation for people diagnosed with dementia.

‘Experience Nature’: Dementia-friendly guided tours and events at the zoo and botanical gardens
Chemnitz Zoo and the City of Chemnitz’s Botanical Garden are jointly organising a programme of events to mark the nationwide Dementia Awareness Week, under the theme ‘Experiencing Nature’. The programme includes dementia-friendly guided tours, a hands-on activity and an information session.
The Botanical Garden is offering scented garden tours on two days for people with dementia and their carers. On another tour, they can experience nature with all their senses. Chemnitz Zoo is also offering a dementia-friendly guided tour. In addition, interactive stations for people with dementia will be set up one morning. And representatives from the fields of nursing, care and support for people with disabilities will present their services at an information evening.

Admission: standard admission price
At various interactive stations, people with dementia and their carers can explore materials using all their senses and look at, touch and feel different surfaces, shapes and natural materials such as feathers, fur, hay or straw.
Animal Memories – Dementia-friendly zoo tour
Wednesday, 23 September, 4.00 pm
Admission: 10 euros per person

This zoo tour invites people with dementia and their carers to enjoy a relaxed shared experience. In a peaceful atmosphere, they can discover selected animals and take time to reminisce, chat and take in sensory impressions.
Information session for providers of care, support and assistance for people with disabilities

At an information session, the zoo will present its wide range of services to providers of care, support and assistance for people with disabilities.
Botanical Garden
When plants evoke memories – a scented garden tour with Jeanette Quegwer and Sten Gillner
Monday 21 September at 10.00 am and Friday 25 September at 3.00 pm

Cost: €9.50 per person, €5 reduced rate

This guided tour invites people with dementia and their carers to discover plants in a gentle and sensory way. The focus is on the sense of smell: aromatic herbs, fragrant flowers and leaves that evoke memories.
Experiencing nature with all the senses – guided tour with Jeanette Quegwer & Reina Fink

A key part of the guided tour is the tactile trail, where visitors can consciously experience different natural materials through their feet and hands. The garden’s animals are also part of the tour: guinea pigs, goats and rabbits can be observed and gently stroked.

A diagnosis of dementia can throw your life completely off course. For the person with dementia and their family, the time afterwards is associated with many questions, uncertainties and fears.
The motto for World Alzheimer's Day 2025 is "Dementia - be and stay human". This message is intended to draw attention to the fact that people affected by dementia are and will remain the same people. Despite their illness, their experiences, memories, experiences and emotions continue to characterise them and are sometimes hidden deep within them. This often presents relatives and loved ones with a challenging everyday life. The 11th information day aims to show them how to overcome the everyday challenges so that they can be and remain human together with their loved ones.
With this event, the DementiaNet_C would like to inform and sensitise people about dementia-related changes in an understandable way. Interested parties can look forward to an exciting day with authentic testimonials, a panel discussion and a question-and-answer session that will give them a glimpse behind the scenes of dementia and help them understand it better. Information stands will provide knowledge about support services.
