Wood-fired combined heat and power plant under construction

Together with representatives from eins energie in sachsen GmbH & Co. KG, as well as the construction company and the operator, Mayor Knut Kunze laid the foundation stone for a new wood-fired combined heat and power plant on Monday.

A power station is being built in Siegmar on Mauersberger Straße, which is set to supply between 16 and 18 megawatts of heat to Chemnitz’s district heating network and feed up to 7 megawatts of electricity into the grid. The power station’s operator, based in the Netherlands, has signed a 20-year contract with eins for the supply of heat.

Construction work began in August, and the power station is due to come online at the end of 2027. The power station generates energy by burning natural wood, around 90 per cent of which will come from within a radius of approximately 250 kilometres. This wood includes, for example, wood waste from forests, landscape management or roadside tree pruning.

The plant also features a comprehensive flue gas cleaning system, ensuring that emission levels remain below the statutory limits.

According to a city council resolution, our energy supply is to become climate-neutral by 2040. This will require a gradual transition away from the fuels and technologies currently in use towards renewable energy sources, in both the electricity and heating sectors. Under the Heat Planning Act, existing district heating networks, such as those in the city of Chemnitz, are subject to binding requirements for gradual decarbonisation. The biomass combined heat and power plant that is to be built here represents a key component in achieving this ambitious goal.
