The almost 200-page report provides information on developments in the health and living conditions of children and young people in Chemnitz from 1997 to 2004. In this report, the public health department provides information on social and health-related factors in the Chemnitz area, including the care situation, social welfare, early detection examinations, language development and immunisation protection.
Youth welfare services are listed and statements are made on the drug and addiction situation. In addition, programmes are presented on healthy eating, promoting exercise through meaningful leisure activities, stress and conflict management and strengthening pupils' personalities against the dangers of addiction.
The examination results of the paediatric and youth medical service of the City of Chemnitz's health department indicate school-relevant developmental abnormalities such as speech disorders, motor-coordinative developmental deficits and behavioural problems in many pupils. Findings requiring treatment have increased significantly among pupils starting school in recent school years. Children and adolescents are dominated by "sitting stress" at school, in front of the television and the computer.
