The tasks of the public health service are diverse, are carried out locally by the health authorities and are governed by federal and state laws and, to a lesser extent, by EU law (e.g. monitoring of bathing waters).
The public health department of the city of Chemnitz is the regional public health service authority and thus the third pillar of the healthcare system alongside inpatient and outpatient care. Essentially, monitoring, preventive and caring tasks are carried out. The focus of the public health service is on the area of prevention.
