The stage is set for the new season
Sparks are flying right from the start: this year’s season-opening concert will take place as an open-air concert on Theaterplatz. And that’s just the beginning.
Under the baton of the conducting trio Benjamin Reiners, Kens Lui and Maximilian Otto, the opera ensemble, opera choir and the Robert Schumann Philharmonic Orchestra will present highlights from the premieres and revivals of the new season on Friday 28 August, starting at 7.30 pm. To round off the concert, the traditional closing fireworks display – ‘composed’ especially for this evening – will light up the night sky.
In September, the premiere of a musical and the 12th edition of the international festival ‘Tanz | Moderne | Tanz’ will add further highlights to the start of the season. Goethe’s *Reineke Fuchs* will also be staged. Among the new productions is the premiere of the musical *Titanic – The Musical*, starting on 19 September. However, the musical does not tell a fictional love story, but focuses on the real events of the voyage. Opera director Christine Marquardt and the ensemble will offer a first glimpse into the production on 6 September at 11 am at the Opera House as part of the ‘Spot on!’ programme.
Furthermore, new productions of Friedrich Schiller’s comedy *Der Parasit* will run from September, and Mary Shelley’s *Frankenstein* from October.
Behind the scenes
On Thursday 3 September from 7.30 pm and on Friday 4 September, from 7 pm, the Robert Schuhmann Philharmonic Orchestra, featuring cellist Stéphanie Huang, will open its symphony concert season with the ‘Symphonic Opening Party’ at the Stadthalle. Chief Conductor Benjamin Reiners has once again brought composer and sound designer Jonas Urbat to Chemnitz for the occasion. For his new composition ‘#BehindTheScenes’, Urbat has collected everyday sounds from the orchestra’s daily routine and developed them into a work for orchestra and live electronics. Video artist Nicolas Haumann contributes an additional visual dimension. The evening then draws to a close with ‘Beats & Drinks’.
Opening Festival and Dance Culture
On 5 September, the drama and puppet theatre departments invite you to the opening celebration at the Spinnbau. The start of the season will be celebrated together with the audience, featuring a varied programme for young and old alike and a first glimpse of the new season. A week later, on 12 September, the season’s first drama premiere, ‘Welcome to the Grand Hotel Deutschland’, will follow.
The Chemnitz Ballet brings international dance to the city from 16 to 20 September: the Tanz | Moderne | Tanz festival is now in its twelfth year. Under the motto ‘Dance Industry Culture meets Industrial Heritage’, the festival is expanding its venues and, for the first time, turning ‘die fabrik chemnitz’ into a stage. Alongside the ballet hall and various locations in public spaces, the programme features performances by the Cie Retouramont and Company Chameleon, amongst others. Workshops and performances in urban spaces round off the programme.
