On the road for urban cleanliness

Nothing works without Team Orange. As the waste disposal and city cleaning company of the city of Chemnitz, ASR moves around 82,000 tonnes of waste every year, including around 31,000 tonnes of residual waste, almost 22,000 tonnes of compostable waste, around 9,000 tonnes of bulky waste, almost 12,000 tonnes of cardboard/paper and around 730 tonnes of used textiles. The municipal subsidiary, WeTraC GmbH, also collects almost 7,400 tonnes of lightweight packaging as part of the Dual System Germany.
This means that 95 employees in household waste disposal empty around 973,000 black bins, 1,053,000 brown bins, 639,000 blue bins and 722,000 yellow bins per year.
In addition, there are 40 employees who realise around 5,100 collections of bulky waste or accept waste other than household waste - such as bulky waste, green waste or electronic waste - at five recycling centres distributed throughout the city on weekdays.
"It's good that this waste collection day exists to honour the industry. Waste disposal often only becomes an issue when something goes wrong. It's a real feat to empty around 17,000 waste bins every day - especially with the current construction site situation in the city. I can only take my hat off to my colleagues," says Operations Manager Markus Kropp, referring at the same time to the enormous contribution made by ASR and WeTraC GmbH to a successful circular economy, sustainable use of raw materials and a clean, liveable city.
There are also 60 colleagues working in street cleaning in Chemnitz, who cover around 88,000 kilometres on roads and pavements every year, i.e. more than twice around the world. In the process, they empty the city's litter bins almost 100,000 times, resulting in around 250 tonnes of waste.
In addition, eleven employees ensure that around 29,000 drains are flushed and 11,400 combined sewer pits and small sewage treatment plants are emptied every year.</p
<p>The ASR's customer service team of ten employees meanwhile takes around 40,000 calls a year.
If Operations Manager Kropp had one more wish for Waste Collection Day, he would change the name to "Waste Disposal Day". "That may sound more cumbersome, but we don't collect useless waste, we collect recyclable materials and raw materials. Let's just take compostable waste - for which we are building a biogas fermentation plant ourselves, which we will use to produce biogas for Chemnitz from 2030. Just one example of the intrinsic value of our freight, provided that the people of Chemnitz support us with good waste separation."
<p<p>On International Waste Collection Day, the ASR will be presenting all topics relating to waste separation and waste avoidance at Neumarkt under the motto "Chemnitz separates" - together with the "Germany separates" campaign organised by the initiative Mülltrennung-wirkt. Between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., everyone will be able to get into a waste collection vehicle - one from a modern fleet of around 140 vehicles, by the way.
