It is a special vehicle that is used to combat chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear (CBRN) hazards. The head of the Chemnitz professional fire brigade, René Kraus, symbolically took over the key.
The core specialisations and equipment of the equipment vehicle include
- Hazard defence: sealing leaks (sealing pads, sealing compound), collecting liquids (tubs, collapsible containers), fire protection (fire extinguishers)
- Analysis and identification: Explosion-proof measuring devices (e.g. for explosion limits), BUND sampling set, test tubes for substance identification
- Radiation protection and respiratory protection: CSA equipment (chemical protection suits), respiratory protection equipment (including explosion-proof radios), decontamination material (drip pans, tarpaulins)
- Logistics and energy: Power generator, lighting mast, explosion-proof cable drums, transport options for equipment
- Additional equipment: Measuring equipment, oil spill barriers and decontamination options
A special feature is the unloading of emergency equipment on roll containers via the rear. These are organised thematically according to requirements, which provides a clear overview of the emergency equipment. Future hazardous goods operations can thus be handled quickly and purposefully and the operational capability expanded.
The vehicle is manned by two qualified firefighters from the professional fire brigade. In addition, the comrades from six volunteer fire brigades in the city of Chemnitz take on the necessary activities as a special task during a hazardous goods operation. The tasks of "bringing emergency equipment into the danger zone" and "decontamination" are separated from each other.
The new procurement also made it necessary to change the specialisation of the three fire stations in the professional fire brigade. The new location of the hazardous goods equipment vehicle is in Fire and Rescue Station 3, and corresponding deployment exercises have already been planned.
With the new conceptualisation of emergency response for CBRN situations, the Chemnitz Fire Department decided to procure a new stand-alone hazardous goods equipment vehicle in 2021. This will replace the hazardous goods roll-off container that has been in use since 1993 and was stationed at Fire and Rescue Station 2. The tender for this specialised vehicle with a total value of almost 500,000 euros was issued in March 2022. The vehicle was finally delivered in January 2025. This marked the start of intensive training and instruction on the new equipment, which fulfils the required standard and is also based on the concept of the GW-G Sachsen.
