New children's library opens at TIETZ
The children's library has been extensively remodelled in recent weeks. In addition to renewing the flooring, conceptual changes were also implemented. The aim of the redesign was to create a library area that is particularly suitable for children, as it can be used intuitively and accessed independently.</p
<p>The new design is geared towards the needs and developmental requirements of children and gives them even better access to media and reading. New, visually clearly recognisable signets have been developed for the youngest library visitors. These were designed by the Chemnitz artist Anne Schlesinger. The signets help children who are not yet able to read to find their way around the library. They ensure low-threshold access, safety and recognition value. This is because children of pre-school age primarily orient themselves visually and therefore react to symbols, colours and images.</p
<p>With the redesign, the library is setting an example for early childhood education, reading promotion and a high quality of stay. In future, the children's library will present itself as a modern experience space that invites visitors to discover, learn and linger.
The fictional literature has been restructured and subdivided thematically - starting with beginning readers (1st grade) up to children in 6th grade. Orientation is no longer primarily based on formal criteria, but on reading skills and main areas of interest. This makes it easier for children to find age- and developmentally appropriate literature.
More space for little explorers is available in the new event room for the youngest children. The popular programmes for daycare and preschool groups take place there in a quiet, child-friendly atmosphere - with plenty of room for lively stories, first reading adventures and curious questions.
Facts and figures: Children and young people make up a third of library users
The Chemnitz City Library welcomes a growing audience of young readers: children and young people make up 33% of all library users - a total of 23,443 people in 2025. This age group is therefore a particularly important target group for the library. Children between the ages of 0 and 12 are most strongly represented.</p
<p>In the first quarter of 2026, 6,838 children, young people and families already used the children's library at the Central Library. In order to meet the high demand, the media stock was expanded to 33,000 items. The range includes books, audio books, music, children's films, board games and electronic games.</p
<p>The media in the yellow group for children aged 2 to 6 are particularly popular. This is followed by the red group and the blue group with fiction.
