On Tuesday, 8 July, the Mayors for Peace flags will once again be raised at Chemnitz Town Hall. Mayors for Peace is an international network of cities committed to the abolition of nuclear weapons and lasting, global peace. The city of Chemnitz has been a member of Mayors for Peace since 2006.
Given the current global political situation, the issue of peace is also very much on young people’s minds. Mayors for Peace and the city of Chemnitz are therefore once again calling on children and young people aged between 6 and 15 to explore the theme of peace and to take part in this year’s competition, ‘What Peace Means to Me’, by submitting their own artwork.
Entries can be handed in at Chemnitz Town Hall or sent to the following address by 21 September – World Peace Day – inclusive:

Mayors for Peace Flag Day
Mayors for Peace Flag Day commemorates an advisory opinion issued by the International Court of Justice in The Hague (the principal judicial organ of the United Nations), which was published on 8 July 1996. The International Court of Justice ruled that “there is an obligation under international law to pursue in good faith and bring to a conclusion negotiations leading to nuclear disarmament in all its aspects under strict and effective international control.” To serve as a clear and visible reminder of this, hundreds of towns and municipalities across Germany fly the Mayors for Peace flag in front of their town halls.
