On Wednesday, Thomas Kütter, the councillor responsible for building and construction, carried out the symbolic ground-breaking ceremony for the comprehensive refurbishment of the ‘Rappelkiste’ nursery building in Borna-Heinersdorf, together with representatives from the political sphere, the City of Chemnitz and the trades involved in the construction work.
The modernisation will improve energy efficiency, fire safety and the building’s technical systems. Plans include new windows, roof refurbishment, a new air-to-water heat pump and a photovoltaic system. The existing gas condensing boiler will be retained to cover peak demand.
The educational facilities will also be improved: flexible group rooms with movable partition walls, a new covered loggia providing an additional outdoor area, and a new external emergency staircase are all part of the refurbishment. The electrical, heating, plumbing and ventilation systems will be completely replaced.
Construction work is scheduled to be completed in November 2027. The refurbishment will ensure the nursery is fit for the future, combining modern care, safety and sustainability.
The City of Chemnitz is investing around 2.1 million euros from its own funds in the maintenance and modernisation of the site. The childcare capacity of 103 children, including 25 nursery places and three integration places, will remain unchanged.
