Foster family in Chemnitz receives the Saxon Citizens’ Award

Cornelia and Horst Wöckel from Chemnitz were awarded the Saxony Citizens’ Prize last week in recognition of their work as foster parents. On 9 November, the Youth Welfare Office is holding an information session on the subject.

Together with two charitable foundations, the Free State of Saxony thereby honours associations, initiatives, institutions or individuals whose dedication serves as an example of civic engagement, social cohesion and democracy.

Cornelia and Horst Wöckel have already provided temporary emergency foster care for more than 100 children, one of whom has remained with the family in long-term care. The children need a great deal of care, as many of them have emotional or physical difficulties. As well as numerous visits to the doctor, foster parents also organise contact with the biological parents and maintain contact with the youth welfare office. For the past 14 years,
the couple have been working as foster parents in Chemnitz. They received the award in the ‘People’ category, which comes with a prize of 5,000 euros.

Becoming a foster family

To ensure that children continue to find a safe temporary home in future, the Youth Welfare Office, together with its partners, is looking for people who would be willing to take in foster children. The next information session will take place on 9 November at 4 pm at the Moritzhof. Further information and event dates can be found at: www.chemnitz.de/pflegekinder
