From 16 to 27 March, interested parties are invited to discover China at the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre. In twelve events, participants can get to know the "Middle Kingdom" in the field of tension between rich cultural tradition and economic strength.
On Monday 16 March at 6 p.m., the theme weeks will be opened in the VHS gallery on the 4th floor of the TIETZ with the vernissage of the exhibition "High Speed". Around 20 pictures by Chinese photographers Lu Jiechen and Zhang Kunkun will be on display. Both artists address the themes of mobility and acceleration through the central motif of a high-speed train, offering both contrasting and complementary perspectives. The exhibition was realised by the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre in collaboration with the Confucius Institute Nuremberg-Erlangen. The "High Speed" exhibition is complemented by ten photographs of Chemnitz's twin city Taiyuan in the Chinese province of Shanxi.
China's ancient teachings and traditions often stand in contrast to the fast-paced modern high-performance society. These will be the focus of the exhibition on Wednesday, 18 March, starting at 6 pm. Under the title "An annual cycle of Chinese festivals and customs", cultural scientist Dr Maria Faust will explain Chinese festivities and rituals in a lively way.
China's most famous invention is probably porcelain. Augustus the Strong was obsessed with the precious beauty of the "white gold" from China. His large collection can be admired on 24 March during a special guided tour of the porcelain collection in the Dresden Zwinger.
Anyone who would like to try out a Chinese art form for themselves can "get to know calligraphy" on 26 March from 6 to 7.30 pm and create simple characters with a brush and ink.
Those interested can learn what the characters mean orally on 23 March from 5 p.m. in the introductory course "Chinese on the move".
Historical and current social aspects will also be discussed during the two-week China special. For example, there will be a lecture on "Family structures and ageing in today's China" on 20 March from 7 pm and a reading on "History of modern China" with the Berlin sinologist Prof. Klaus Mühlhahn on 25 March from 6 pm.
