Dementia-friendly activities at the zoo
That is why the zoo is constantly developing its programmes to appeal to people at all stages of life – from young to old – and to break down barriers. With this aim in mind, Chemnitz Zoo has been working over the past few months with DemenzNetz_C to develop dementia-friendly programmes.
The measures were developed in collaboration with people living with dementia. Their experiences, feedback and specific needs were directly incorporated into the design of the programmes. Together, the zoo’s paths were assessed for barriers and to ensure a dementia-friendly route, and guided tours specifically tailored to the target group were designed. The focus of the dementia-sensitive guided tours is on engaging all the senses. For this reason, the tours are complemented by various natural and animal-based materials designed to be touched, explored and marvelled at.
For example, participants can explore a porcupine quill or other selected exhibits with their hands. This hands-on experience engages the senses, stimulates conversation and can evoke memories and emotions in a special way. Simple, easy-to-understand language, plenty of time, and easily accessible seating and toilets ensure that participants can feel safe and at ease. At the same time, the guided tours are designed to actively engage participants. Many people associate visits to the zoo with fond childhood memories or recall past experiences of farm life. The newly opened interactive farm is particularly well-suited to this. It is modelled on a farm from over 100 years ago and, with its authentic design, creates a familiar atmosphere. Another key element of the tours is direct contact with the animals.
Observing, feeding or gently touching selected animals appeals to various senses, stirs emotions and creates moments of connection. Such experiences can promote a zest for life and help people with dementia to stay in touch with their surroundings. Chemnitz Zoo will continue to work with DemenzNetz_C on further projects in the coming weeks to continuously expand and develop its dementia-sensitive programmes.
As part of Dementia Awareness Week in September, the zoo and the Botanical Garden will offer a varied programme. This will also mark the launch of the new dementia-sensitive guided tours for people with dementia and their carers. The programme will be published shortly. In addition, Chemnitz Zoo is available to organisations and providers working in the fields of care, support and assistance for people with disabilities to arrange bespoke guided tours. Together, outings can be tailored precisely to the needs of each group and designed to be a memorable experience.
