The retaining wall by the Wittgensdorfer Bach needs to be replaced

Construction work on a new retaining wall along the Wittgensdorfer Bach, in the area between Obere Hauptstraße 134 and 152 in Wittgensdorf, began this week. Work on the new structure is due to continue until August 2027.

For reasons of structural stability, the existing wall must be replaced with a new structure. To this end, Obere Hauptstraße has been completely closed since yesterday, Monday.

The project as a whole will run from September 2026 to August 2027 and is divided into several construction phases. During this time, the retaining wall, which is no longer structurally sound, will be rebuilt with micro-pile anchoring; the wall crest and coping, including the parapet of a further retaining wall, will be completely renewed; and the embankment on the left-hand side and the riverbed will be restored to their natural state.

For the first construction phase, the road will be completely closed from 7 September to 9 October 2026. The sheer size of the drilling rig alone – not to mention applicable health and safety regulations – means that, during this period, only a complete closure of Obere Hauptstraße within the construction site is possible. The diversion will be via Leipziger Straße – Bornaer Straße – Wittgensdorfer Straße – Chemnitzer Straße.

The construction site can be passed through during the autumn half-term holidays. The next phase of construction will begin on 26 October 2026. The retaining wall is scheduled for completion in August 2027.

Following a public tender, the contract has been awarded to Phönix Bau GmbH of Aue. The construction costs amount to around 850,000 euros.

For technical reasons, a full road closure is unfortunately unavoidable. This has been agreed and co-ordinated by the Transport and Civil Engineering Office in consultation with the transport authority, the police, Chemnitzer Verkehrs-AG (CVAG), Regiobus Mittelsachsen, the fire service and ASR.

Passengers on CVAG and regional transport services will be particularly affected, as bus routes will no longer be able to run continuously and, despite all efforts, it has not been possible to arrange suitable diversions. The walk between the CVAG’s alternative stops is therefore approximately 800 metres.
