The City Archives are currently spread across four locations within the Chemnitz city area: Aue 16, the Building Records Archive, Moritzhof and TIETZ, and offer access to records in two reading rooms.
The remit of the City Archives has changed considerably over the past ten years. These include the management of the Building Records Archive, the development, updating and contribution to the City of Chemnitz’s Digital Agenda, involvement in the introduction of electronic records within the city administration, and supporting the departments with their move to the Technical Town Hall on Friedensplatz. Preparations are also currently under way for the move from the Moritzhof.
As a result, the Chemnitz City Archives will experience unavoidable restrictions on reading room operations at the Historical Archives (Aue 16) and the Building Records Archive (Reichstraße 1a) sites, as well as on the processing of enquiries.
The time slot for access to the reading rooms will be communicated to interested parties when they book their individual appointments.
Enquiries regarding building records will nevertheless be given priority. The average waiting time for an appointment to inspect records is eight weeks. Access to the Historical City Archives is extremely limited until the move from the Moritzhof is complete, due to staffing constraints. The average waiting time for an appointment is therefore twelve weeks.
