Botanical Garden: School Biology Centre is being gradually modernised
At the Chemnitz Botanical Garden, the rooms and facilities of the School Biology Centre are being gradually refurbished and modernised. The first results are already visible: the Forest Room and the lecture theatre have been completed. Both rooms are used for the School Biology Centre’s educational programmes and will, in future, offer better conditions for lessons, events and nature education activities.
The Botanical Garden on Leipziger Straße has been in existence for more than 125 years and is one of Chemnitz’s most special places for learning and discovery. Spanning an area of twelve hectares, this municipal facility combines the Botanical Garden, the School Biology Centre and the Nature Conservation Centre. This makes the Botanical Garden a place of learning, a destination for day trips and a green space for hands-on experiences all in one.
Its particular strength lies in combining the imparting of knowledge with direct experience of nature. Children and young people can discover, observe and experience plants and habitats on site using all their senses. This creates an approach to nature, environmental education and nature conservation that goes beyond traditional classroom teaching.
The Botanical Garden is open to all residents of Chemnitz and visitors. Admission is free.
The gradual modernisation is being supported by the energy supplier eins. This enables rooms and facilities to be refurbished and updated more quickly. At the end of a tour to view the current state of the refurbishment, Dr Sten Gillner, Director of the Botanical Garden, presented the representatives from eins with a bouquet of flowers from the garden.
