All fired up for the anniversary

A double cause for celebration: the Chemnitz Fire Brigade is celebrating two anniversaries on 5 September. To mark the occasion, Fire Station 1 at 11 Schadestraße will be holding an open day.

From 9 am to 4 pm, visitors can explore the historic fire station, discover modern fire-fighting equipment and gain an insight into the work of the fire service through a range of demonstrations.

The event marks the 160th anniversary of the Chemnitz professional fire brigade and the 120th anniversary of the opening of the main fire station on Schadestraße.

Technology, History and Guided Tours

The open day begins at 9 am with a musical welcome from a trumpeter on the tower of Fire Station 1. Various fire engines will be on display throughout the day on the green opposite the fire station. The ‘Krankenstall’ will host a presentation on preventive fire safety. An ambulance will also be on display there.

Historical and modern fire-fighting equipment, models and a historic hand-operated fire pump on a horse trailer round off the display. During guided tours of the fire station, visitors can explore the historic building from the inside. The tours start from 10 am at 45-minute intervals. In the training room, the fire service will also be showing the series ‘Die Feuerwehr bei DMAX’. The Chemnitz – Erzgebirgskreis – Mittelsachsen Integrated Regional Control Centre will provide an insight into the journey of an emergency call: from the initial report to the journey to hospital.

For children, there will be a bouncy castle, face painting, candyfloss, popcorn and soft-serve ice cream. At the water spray wall, young guests can try their hand at using water just like firefighters do. The youth fire brigade’s trailer will also be on site. Stacking beer crates will require both skill and courage.
