A new home for roller sports
The new Chemnitz skate hall is designed for the fun sports of skateboarding, BMX, dirt MTB, inline skating, scooters, roller skates, WCMX (wheelchair) and parkour
and is run by the Rollfieber e. V. sports club. It replaces the former ‘Druckbude’ skate hall, which was also located on the grounds of the
Schönherrfabrik but no longer met the necessary requirements. This marks the fulfilment of a long-awaited dream for the regional extreme sports scene.
Last Saturday, Mayor Sven Schulze, together with Alexander Beck, project manager and board member of the Rollfieber e. V. association, and Steve
Tietze, managing director of Schönherr Weba GmbH, opened the new skate park on the grounds of the Schönherr factory. The family, youth and sports event featured various shows involving BMX, scooters and skateboards.
The highest ramp measures 3.20 metres
The skating area covers just under 1,000 square metres. In addition, there are spectator and leisure areas, offices, changing rooms, a reception area, a service station,
a workshop and an outdoor area. The interior layout for sporting use comprises two bowls (for skateboarders), two mobile curbs (for
riding on an edge), a jump box, four practice elements and several ramps. The highest ramp measures around 3.20 metres. There is also a foam pit for soft landings when trying out new tricks.
City Council resolution
The sports facilities and the design of the entrance area, which houses the hire counter and workshop, were funded by the City of Chemnitz. This was based on a City Council resolution dated 15 May 2024 (BA-050/2024), which allocated a sum of 700,000 euros. Due to general cost increases during the construction work and the rise in the construction price index, the City of Chemnitz’s final contribution amounts to around 770,000 euros. The additional costs were funded by the City of Chemnitz’s Sports Department.
Former warehouse
The building is a warehouse belonging to the former foundry. It is owned by Schönherr Weba GmbH, which had previously refurbished the hall for around 1.7 million euros. New features include the sanitary facilities, the façade, the ventilation system and the heating system.
The City of Chemnitz acts as the tenant of the new skate hall and sublets it to the sports club Rollfieber e. V. The club’s usage concept envisages not only sporting activities but also social education programmes geared towards youth culture.
