Definitive kidney failure cannot be cured. For those affected, this diagnosis means lifelong treatment with dialysis (artificial kidney) or the transplantation of a donor kidney. In Chemnitz alone, around 550 patients receive medical care in two dialysis centres (including Frankenberg) with kidney replacement therapy (dialysis) and around 165 kidney transplant patients (also kidney replacement therapy). Nationwide, there are approximately 87,000 patients. These figures clearly show that this disease is not an isolated case, but a very widespread condition.
Despite improved treatment options, life with chronic kidney disease and the associated need for dialysis treatment is complicated for patients and associated with many difficulties and restrictions in daily life. The years of dialysis treatment also very often lead to considerable concomitant and secondary diseases.
Committed dialysis patients therefore founded the "Dialysis Patients' Interest Group" in 1990 with the aim of supporting patients in the pre-dialysis stage, dialysis patients and kidney transplant patients with their worries and needs, representing the interests of these patients to decision-makers and offering them help to help themselves.
With its work, the association aims to complement medical care in a meaningful way and promote a life worth living with the disease.
