As part of the renovation work, the foundations were, amongst other things, exposed, repaired and plastered both externally and internally; the steps were removed and relaid; and a drainage system was installed. In addition, the covers of the urn niches were removed and relocated.

The building, an architecturally significant rotunda situated not far from the entrance to the municipal crematorium, had been refurbished from April onwards following years of closure. Picture: Franziska Wöllner

The main work involved removing and re-fitting the upper coping ring, replacing various stones, renewing the joints, and carrying out roofing work on the upper coping ring. The small-format and mosaic paving was removed and relaid. The restoration was carried out whilst preserving as much of the original fabric as possible. Retouching was also carried out with great restraint.

The total cost of the project, including expert reports and planning, amounts to around 270,000 euros. 70 per cent of the costs are being funded by the Free State of Saxony under the Special Programme for the Preservation of Historic Monuments. Following the structural restoration of the Monopteros, plans are in place to enhance the design of the immediate surroundings. This is not expected to take place until after the plants have been delivered in November 2026.
