Recognising and challenging sexism, and working together to bring about change

The exhibition ‘Together Against Sexism’ will be on display at the Town Hall from 8 October

From Thursday 8 October, an exhibition on sexism will be on display in the exhibition space on the ground floor of the Town Hall. It explores questions such as ‘Where does sexism begin?’ and ‘How do we encounter it in everyday life – and what can we do about it ourselves?’. The exhibition is being presented by Franziska Herold, the City of Chemnitz’s Equal Opportunities Officer, and was developed by the ‘Together Against Sexism’ alliance.

Admission is free during Town Hall opening hours: Monday to Thursday from 8 am to 6 pm, and Friday from 8 am to 4 pm. The exhibition runs until 26 October and is designed to be family-friendly. An audio version is also available via QR codes on the display panels.

Sexism is not always obvious. It can manifest itself in prejudices and gender roles, in seemingly casual remarks, or in the different treatment of people based on their gender. The exhibition invites visitors to take a closer look and view everyday situations from a different perspective.

Through twelve posters, the exhibition provides information about sexism, its various forms and its effects. It highlights where we may encounter sexist stereotypes and prejudices – in everyday life, at work, in the media or in public spaces. At the same time, it highlights ways in which each and every one of us can take action against sexism in our own lives.

Franziska Herold, Equal Opportunities Officer for the City of Chemnitz: “We encounter sexism in all sorts of places – sometimes loud and obvious, sometimes quiet and subtle. The exhibition aims to encourage people to take a closer look, to start a conversation, but also to question their own behaviour.”

Eradicating sexism is a task for society as a whole. In addition to political and legal frameworks, changes are needed within companies, institutions and in our everyday interactions. Deeply entrenched gender stereotypes must also be questioned and broken down.

The exhibition ‘Together Against Sexism’ is organised by the ‘Together Against Sexism’ alliance. This nationwide alliance is committed to highlighting sexism and sexual harassment, raising awareness of these issues and jointly developing measures to create a society free from sexism.
