Suspicious find on the Sonnenberg - possible evacuation on Sunday 14 June

At a building site at Jakobstraße 20 on Sonnenberg, a suspicious metallic object was found in the ground during construction work, which could be a World War II bomb. In the event that a large-scale evacuation is necessary, the city has prepared a plan with many partners.

On Sunday morning, experts will uncover the object, which is about four metres underground. If it is a bomb, the state's explosive ordnance disposal service will then decide on site whether an evacuation is necessary.

The city is asking all citizens who live in this area to be prepared to leave their homes from 8 a.m. on Sunday, 14 June, if necessary, and to move outside the exclusion zone with a radius of around one kilometre.

In the event of an evacuation, large parts of the Sonnenberg, parts of the Luther Quarter, the main railway station and other areas in the city centre will be affected. A total of around 22,000 Chemnitz residents live in this area. For this reason, there will also be restrictions and cancellations for buses, trains and trams from 7 am.

The city is preparing alternative accommodation for this day. Anyone wishing to make use of such accommodation should report centrally to the stadium on Gellertstraße. From there, they will be taken to the alternative accommodation.

A plan is currently being drawn up for people who live in care homes or are dependent on assistance, so that they can be taken to alternative accommodation with the help of the fire brigade, rescue service and aid organisations. Groups of people in need of care will already be transported to alternative accommodation on Saturday.

All further and up-to-date information will be published on the city's website(homepage) and on the city's social media channels.

Information can be obtained by telephone on 0371 488 33 44.
