Chemnitz stones and their use in the surrounding area
Lecture by the city archive on Wednesday, 15 May, 6 p.m. in the city archive
As part of the series "The City Archive presents", a lecture on "Chemnitz stones and their use in the surrounding area" will take place on Wednesday, 15 May at 6 pm in the City Archive building. The speaker is the mineralogist and regional historian Dr Dr Frieder Jentsch. Admission is free.
The fact that many different types of stone were used in Chemnitz in earlier times is visible in the cityscape. What is less well known is that porphyry tuffs that could be built on were not only quarried in Chemnitz, but were also used en masse as building material in the surrounding area for almost eight centuries because no suitable material was available locally. The stones can be found in places up to fifty kilometres away from Chemnitz and many an architectural and artistic gem is hidden behind them. As these materials are often disposed of but can no longer be recovered today, more attention should be paid to these materials because they are essentially resources.
