Chemnitz honoured for climate protection
City once again receives the European Energy Award in Gold
The city of Chemnitz has once again been recognised for its efforts in the area of climate protection. Following a review by external auditors, it has once again received the European Energy Award in Gold after 2015.
The European Energy Award is a European certification procedure for municipal climate protection policy. All of the city's energy-related activities are systematically recorded and evaluated in six areas of action.
The areas are energy-efficient urban development, municipal building management, supply and disposal, mobility as well as communication and co-operation with other partners.
With 82.7 per cent of the possible points, Chemnitz was able to improve significantly compared to the last audit in 2015. The interdisciplinary work of the departments and municipal companies is crucial for success in terms of climate protection.
The city's energy team brings together various specialist departments, representatives of municipal companies as well as chambers, clubs and associations. The team also works closely with Chemnitz University of Technology. The concrete planning and implementation of projects is tackled jointly.
Miko Runkel, Mayor of the Legal, Safety and Environmental Protection Department, commented:
"The eea process has been pointing us in the right direction in climate protection for years.
We know that there is still a long way to go and that the aim must be continuous improvement. However, in order to make an independent and continuous contribution to the global goals, we also need to set the right course, which we have already done at municipal level. The path we have taken will help us to tackle solutions for an environmentally conscious and sustainable future in Chemnitz with answers from experts."
Examples of the work include the energy-efficient refurbishment of entire neighbourhoods or the increased use of renewable energies such as solar thermal energy or wood chips. The partners of the energy team are also working together to realise the phase-out of lignite as quickly as possible and to expand local public transport.
