Watering bags for young trees
Parks department tests new irrigation method
At Wall, Johannisplatz and Zietenstraße, around 100 young trees are being tested with
watering bags are being tested on around 100 young trees. Two different sizes of 57 and 75 litres are being tested at these heat-stressed locations. The irrigation bags are suitable for trees with a trunk circumference of up to 30 cm. For larger trunk circumferences, two watering bags can be connected with zip fasteners to supply the tree with up to 150 litres of water.
Young trees in particular suffer from the increasing climate extremes and will
will require even more care and attention in future. Among other things, the young trees must be supplied with around 80 to 100 litres of water every week after planting in dry weather. As this is time-consuming, the Parks Department is looking for new, innovative methods.
The advantage of the watering bag lies in the drop-by-drop delivery of water to the tree. The tree is slowly supplied with water for several hours without the water running off the surface and the root area is shaded by the bag. Depending on the circumference of the trunk, refilling is necessary once or twice a week.
Trees in urban areas are invaluable for life in our city. They are regarded as "green lungs", producing oxygen, providing shade, filtering dust and noise. They therefore improve the urban climate and ensure that people feel comfortable in our city.
