Upgrading the entrance area Küchwaldpark - Leipziger Straße

Invitation to the photo session on 21 November, 9.30 a.m.

This week, planting work will begin on the new trees at the entrance to Küchwald Park. The redesign of the entrance area on Leipziger Straße, opposite house number 135, south-east of the ice sports centre, is intended to create a representative, functional and monumental entrance area to Küchwaldpark. Peter Börner, Head of the Parks Department, will be on site on Thursday, 21 November at 9.30 a.m. to supervise the planting and inspect the progress of the construction work. Representatives of the media are cordially invited to this event.

The project will involve planting five full-flowering cherries and shrubs to the left and right of the new paths. In addition to the existing trees and shrubs, 40 new rhododendrons will be planted. The landscaping work will be carried out by Garten- und Landschaftsbau GmbH & Co KG from Chemnitz, Röhrsdorf.

Once the necessary pipe relocations and the renovation of the access shafts to the underground facilities of utility company eins energie have been completed, two new water-bound paths will surround a central lawn roundel with ornamental planting, i.e. perennial beds with grasses and flower bulbs.

If there is no onset of winter, the construction and planting work should be largely completed by the end of the year. For natural stabilisation (settlement), the new water-bound paths will have to remain closed off until spring 2020. Once the construction work has been completed, eight new benches and six waste bins will be installed. The newly created areas will be maintained by the contractor until 30 October 2021.

The new entrance area was planned by Kretschmar & Partner Landschaftsarchitekten mbB from Dresden, which has also been commissioned to supervise the construction work. The total costs amount to approx. 283,000 euros. Two-thirds of the measure is being funded by the federal and state government's urban redevelopment programme, the upgrading part of the programme, with urban development funding from the federal government, the Free State of Saxony and the City of Chemnitz.
