Two years of microprojects for Chemnitz2025
A review - and the outlook for upcoming projects
It all started two years ago in the summer. On the way to becoming European Capital of Culture 2025, we wanted to encourage people to bring their own small projects into city life - and launched a funding programme for micro-projects. With great success, as many projects still have an impact today.
So far, the support of the creators with up to 2,500 euros has enabled various workshops, designs, symposia, performances, workshops, new event formats, artistic experiments, discussions and the realisation of new projects.artistic experiments, discussion rounds, intercultural encounters, neighbourhood projects, fan culture, themed walks - in other words, this small step from "We should..." to "Let's just do it..."
In total, almost 200 applications were submitted over the past two years and 43 projects were funded with around 73,000 euros. The selection is made by a jury of Chemnitz residents appointed by the application's programme council.
In the last few weeks alone, several of the Chemnitz2025 micro-projects have provided cultural impetus in the city:
Actors invited visitors on theatrical discoveries with "Glamnitz_Rock'n'Roll", "Glamnitz_Drugs" and "Glamnitz_Sex" - and on a search for traces of glamorous Chemnitz.
At the "2nd Sonnenberg Print Days", visitors could be there live as the artists sketched, cut, tore, etched and finally nailed prints to the walls.
Meanwhile, the "Eating culture in Chemnitz against the backdrop of Europe" project at the Montessori school designed feasible scenarios for an ecological way of life in Chemnitz.
In addition, the first screening of the mobile bicycle cinema was shown in the old Diamantwerk and Chemnitz experienced its first bicycle concert with B.U.M._Kultur in Fahrt.
The following projects from the last funding round, in which seven projects were subsidised with a total of 15,000 euros, will be presented soon:
Colourful play street on the Brühl
A "play street" is to be created between the Zuhause sign and Zöllnerplatz in order to improve the quality of life for young and old and at the same time slow down car traffic there. Playing fields for "Huppekästl" or "Himmel und Hölle", "Viking chess" or "Mensch ärgere Dich nicht" and a "ladder game" are planned.
Motion Composer - music through movement
A system that converts body movement into music is to be installed at a freely accessible location in Chemnitz. The aim is to create a new form of public interaction and thus space for encounters and social interaction.
Rabbaz magazine
The free magazine by students for students aims to report independently on city and university life as well as culture, science and politics as a print and offline version. The aim is to offer young people in Chemnitz a platform for discussion.
New! Ostmoderne!
A temporary project space in the Chemnitz bus station that aims to stimulate a broad, public discourse on "Ostmoderne" and strengthen the topic within the Capital of Culture application.
Portraits of architects
An exhibition by photographer Udo Hesse in the Tankstelle project space will present selected portraits of renowned contemporary architects who have realised architecture in Germany and also in Chemnitz, and communicate their works.
(The projects "Ess-Kultur in Chemnitz vor dem Hintergrund Europa" and "B.U.M._Kultur in Fahrt" from the last funding round have already taken place).
The application period for the fifth round of micro-project funding is currently open: The closing date for submissions is 30 September 2019 and a total of €15,000 is once again available for this funding period.
