The vacuum - What is nothingness good for?

Museum für Naturkunde Chemnitz invites you: 15 May, 6.30 pm, event hall, TIETZ, 3rd floor

On Wednesday, 15 May at 6.30 pm, interested parties are invited to the TIETZ event hall for a lecture on the topic of "The vacuum - What is nothingness good for?".

Admission is free.

Emeritus Prof Dr Frank Richter will talk about how we encounter NOTHING every day. The vacuum is an indispensable tool in today's production and research.

When the air is more or less completely pumped out of a container, it is said that there is a vacuum in this container. Technically, this was first achieved to any significant extent in the 17th century by Otto von Guericke.

In the meantime, the vacuum has become an indispensable tool for modern production and research. The largest vacuum systems are particle accelerators, but also test facilities for nuclear fusion or space simulation systems.

In addition to the physical basics, some important vacuum applications will be presented in the lecture. Finally, the speaker will emphasise that vacuum is more than just empty space for modern physics.

Prof Dr Frank Richter held the Chair of Physics of Solids at Chemnitz University of Technology until 2012. He was project manager of the eniPROD leading-edge technology cluster until 2014 and a member of the board of the German Vacuum Society until 2017.
