The fascination of bees

Start of the VHS event series on bees in Chemnitz on 12 March

The Chemnitz Adult Education Centre is hosting two events on the topic of bees in March 2020. They will bring the fascination and responsibility of dealing with bees to life.

The lecture "Refreshed - information for beekeepers for practical use" on Thursday, 12 March, from 7 to 8.30 pm in the TIETZ event hall is aimed at beekeepers and experienced beekeepers who want to expand their knowledge and pass on their experience. They will be informed about current legal regulations. The monitoring of the fight against American foulbrood in Saxony for the Chemnitz area will also take centre stage. You will receive information on preventive measures to prevent an outbreak of American foulbrood. Admission is free. (Registration is not required.)

On Tuesday, 17 March, from 7 p.m., the focus will be on the coexistence of bees in a beehive. Honey bees are among the oldest farm animals in the world. Their honey is a valuable natural product and can be used for natural healing. The communication and distribution of tasks between the bees in a beehive resemble a sophisticated system. The lecture uses impressive pictures to open up the world of bees. On this voyage of discovery, the current dangers for native bees and the background to bee mortality are illuminated in equal measure. The lecture and discussion invite people to contribute their own observations and experiences.

The series of events will continue in May 2020 with lectures and workshops on beekeeping. The events are a cooperation between the Food and Veterinary Office of the City of Chemnitz and the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre.

Background:
There are over 320 apiaries in the city of Chemnitz that promote the preservation of honey bees. Over 250 beekeepers ensure a balanced number of bee colonies in the city. Dwindling populations of honey bees and wild bees have alarmed many nature lovers in recent years. The pollination of wild and cultivated plants no longer seems safe. Pesticides, a lack of food sources and other factors are threatening the diversity and habitats of bees.

If you want to help preserve them, you should inform yourself thoroughly and act with prudence. The "Fascination of Bees" series of events at the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre provides all sorts of interesting facts about bees and shows how demanding it is to keep them.
