Adult education centre event: 21 November, 7 p.m., TIETZ, course room 4.07
On Thursday, 21 November, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the adult education centre, the topic will be "The divided republic" and the question: "Does right-wing populism threaten social cohesion?". The event will be livestreamed from the adult education centre in Eschweiler. It is part of the "Smart Democracy" project organised by the German Adult Education Association. The experts Richard Gebhardt, political scientist, publicist and speaker, and Prof. Dr Beate Küpper, Professor of Social Work in Groups and Conflict Situations at the Niederrhein University of Applied Sciences, will speak on the topic. Questions can be put to the experts from Chemnitz via an online platform. After the end of the broadcast, there will be an opportunity for further discussion on site. The event will take place in TIETZ, course room 4.07. Admission is free.
Our society is drifting apart - at least that is the feeling of many people and sometimes also how it is portrayed in the media. When it comes to topics such as migration and integration, the opposing points of view are hardening: Objective debates with those who think differently rarely succeed. There are increasing attacks on the democratic system, on public media and on diversity as the basis of our coexistence. The success of populist parties can be seen as an expression of a longing for simple truths.
The event will address fundamental questions: What is the current state of cohesion in our society? What are the social and cultural reasons for the success of right-wing populists? How should the results of the 2019 elections be assessed in this context? How can we as a society, but also as individuals, contribute to greater cohesion?
