Stefan Heym: "Speeches to the enemy"
Annotated reading on 18 September, 7 p.m. in the community centre "All in", Rosenhof 14
On Wednesday, 18 September at 7 pm, interested parties are invited to an annotated reading of "Reden an den Feind" by Stefan Heym at the Bürgerhaus "All in", Rosenhof 14, 09111 Chemnitz. Admission is free.
As one of the first and one of the youngest persecuted authors, Stefan Heym had to flee Germany just a few weeks after the National Socialists came to power in 1933. He only returned twelve years later - as a soldier in the US Army. Even in uniform, Heym's sharpest weapon was the word. His texts, distributed on leaflets and over the radio, were intended to help win over Wehrmacht units and the German civilian population in favour of a quick end to the world war and to avoid unnecessary bloodshed. Stefan Heym's journey in 1944/45 took him from Normandy via Luxembourg to his completely destroyed hometown of Chemnitz. Many formative experiences from this time found their way into his later literary work.
The reading is a joint event organised by the International Stefan Heym Society, the "All in" community centre and the City of Chemnitz's cultural services.
