Start of construction of the coordinated Vettersstrasse construction project between Wartburgstrasse and Dittesstrasse

From Monday, 28 October, extensive civil engineering work will begin on Vettersstraße, between Wartburgstraße and Dittesstraße. Over the next 15 months, the public transport facilities in this area will be thoroughly repaired. The work will begin on Dittesstraße and will initially be carried out in the section up to Gutenbergstraße. Three further construction phases are planned (Gutenbergstrasse to Senefelderstrasse; Senefelderstrasse to Fabriciusstrasse and Fabriciusstrasse to Wartburgstrasse). The project should be completed by the end of 2020.

Due to the required full closure in each section, local traffic will continue to be diverted via Bernsdorfer Straße in a one-way system. Only one junction will be closed at a time. Pedestrians will be able to cross the construction site safely during the work. Parking spaces will be made available on the former school sports field for the duration of the work.

Access for emergency services will also be guaranteed in the direct construction area by means of provisional arrangements. Collection points will be set up in sections for waste disposal. The construction company will be responsible for transporting the containers to and from the site. Residents will receive detailed information with details of local contacts for each construction section in good time.

The construction work is a coordinated project between the waste disposal company of the city of Chemnitz (ESC), eins energie and the city's civil engineering department.

The ESC is renewing the existing combined sewer over a length of approx. 650 metres using the cut-and-cover method. At the same time, the drinking water and power lines are being renewed on behalf of eins energie. Temporary replacement lines will be used to ensure that the supply is secured during the construction work. There are no plans to interfere with the existing telephone, internet and television connections in the houses.

Once the pipework has been laid, the roads and pavements will be fundamentally upgraded on behalf of the civil engineering department. A new asphalt surface will replace the current pavement of patched granite cobblestones.

The one-way street regulation set up as a 30 km/h zone with cycle traffic travelling in the opposite direction will continue to apply. Longitudinal parking will remain possible on both sides.

In addition, existing pedestrian crossing points will be upgraded or newly constructed in preparation for the future school site. The pavements in front of the buildings, some of which are very worn, will be resurfaced and fitted with new lighting on both sides.

The work was awarded to the company Gunter Hüttner + Co. GmbH from Chemnitz.

Construction costs totalling EUR 3 million have been budgeted for the entire project, of which EUR 1.7 million will be spent on road and pavement construction. The project is being supported with urban development funding totalling around 510,000 euros.
