Second construction phase of the "Bacillus tube" gets underway

At its meeting today, Chemnitz City Council decided to repair the retaining wall including the ramp and stairs on Dresdner Straße in a second construction phase. The retaining wall at the entrance to the so-called Bazillenröhre at the main railway station was built around 1900.

The upper section of the retaining wall will be demolished and renewed over a length of 104 metres. The ramp will be completely rebuilt. To ensure accessibility, intermediate landings, floor indicators at the beginning and end as well as a railing and wheel deflectors are planned.

Unfortunately, it is not possible to make the stairs barrier-free, but the condition will be improved with support elements for people with disabilities. The steps will be removed and replaced. For better orientation of blind and visually impaired people, the beginning and end of the stairs will also be fitted with floor indicators. The stairs will also be fitted with railings.
Construction can only begin once the pedestrian link from the main railway station to Dresdner Strasse has been completed. This is expected to be completed in June 2020. It is therefore currently expected to start in the third quarter of 2020. The project should be completed by April 2021. The planned costs amount to around 1.37 million euros and will be supported by the ERDF programme for integrated urban development with a grant of around 1.1 million euros.
