Schönherrteich pond in Schönherrpark is filled
Today, the fire brigade is deployed for a very special operation. On the initiative of the Parks Department and in coordination with the Environmental Agency, water is taken from the Chemnitz and pumped into the Schönherrteich pond in Schönherrpark. This also requires an approx. 300 metre long supply line with a road crossing. At the same time, the fire brigade is using this operation as practical training for the fire officer candidates, as the fire brigade school in Lusatia is also closed due to the current situation.
Due to the persistent drought and continued lack of rainfall, the frog population in the Schönherrteich pond is severely endangered. Without sufficient water, the frogs cannot spawn and the tadpoles cannot develop. The common toads have already spawned. It is not possible to wait any longer for rain, as the main spawning season for the pond frog begins around the end of April/beginning of May.
Mayor Michael Stötzer: "It is important to me that our nature is protected and preserved despite the times of crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic. I would like to express my sincere thanks to the firefighters for this unusual assistance."
