Replacement construction of the Talsperrengrund pedestrian bridge in Einsiedel

Photo opportunity: Lifting of the bridge structure on 27 June, 9 a.m.

On Thursday, 27 June, at around 9 a.m., the assembled bridge structure of the pedestrian bridge over the Zwönitz in Einsiedel will be lifted onto the substructure using a heavy mobile crane.

Due to the type of construction and the local conditions, the bridge structure was welded and pre-assembled next to the watercourse on land provided by private landowners. The bridge structure (steel framework with GRP decking) has now been assembled to the point where it can be lifted onto the abutments.

The result is an approx. 23 m long truss bridge (overhead supporting structure) made of steel with ramps on both sides (approx. 22 m and 17 m) made of glass fibre reinforced plastic (GRP).

At the same time, the bridge fulfils the new, currently valid requirements. This means that it can withstand a flood that statistically only occurs once every 100 years (HQ100). It will also be barrier-free.

The pedestrian bridge over the Zwönitz behind the town hall in the Einsiedel district of Chemnitz was severely damaged by the flood in June 2013 and had to be dismantled as an emergency measure. Construction of the new bridge began in September 2018. Final completion is planned for November 2019.

Funding from the Free State of Saxony is available for the new construction of the bridge to repair the damage caused by the 2013 floods.
