Renovation of the synagogue
Extraordinary funds to the Jewish community of Chemnitz
At its meeting today, Chemnitz City Council decided to support the Jewish Community of Chemnitz with 300,000 euros for the third construction phase of the synagogue's refurbishment.
The synagogue, which opened in May 2020, was found to have significant moisture damage in 2015. A property analysis revealed that the entire building was in need of significant refurbishment. In 2015, the city council agreed to support the Jewish community in renovating the synagogue. By 2017, a total of 595,000 euros in investment grants had been paid to the Jewish community.
The renovation of the synagogue is being carried out in three construction phases. The realisation of construction phases I and II had already caused considerable additional requirements that the Jewish community could not bear alone. The City of Chemnitz is now supporting the Jewish community once again and is thus contributing around half of the costs for construction phase III.
This comprises the renovation of the mikvah, including the balcony renovation. This includes the renovation of the mikvah, balcony renovation including drainage and concrete renovation, painting work, repair of the water basin in front of the synagogue, repair of damage to the electrical system, renovation of the flat roof above the administration area, inspection of the ventilation system and possible repair work as well as scaffolding work.
The unscheduled funds are available due to additional revenue from the general and investment key allocations for 2020 that the City of Chemnitz received from the state of Saxony. The expected key allocations for 2020 were already planned in 2018 due to the two-year planning. At that time, the economic situation, population development and tax capacity of the City of Chemnitz as well as the total revenue could not yet be accurately estimated.
In addition, the so-called key mass of the Free State was increased compared to 2019 from the 2018 settlement. The key mass serves as the starting point for calculating the key allocations for the respective municipality.
