Ready for the start of the school year
Next Monday, 19 August, 20,286 girls and boys from Chemnitz - including 2,120 first-graders - will start lessons in municipal and public schools.
Pupil numbers
The number of pupils in Chemnitz has risen gradually in the recent past (school year 2016/2017: 31,891, school year 2017/2018: 32,817 and school year 2018/2019: 33,304). There are more girls and boys studying at schools in the city than there is space for. For this reason, 175 pupils will have to move to mobile classrooms at the start of the new school year. This has already been the case at the Altendorf primary and secondary school since 2017. Mobile classrooms have now also been set up at the "Am Flughafen" secondary school and the Gablenz secondary school. These are equipped in the same way as a normal classroom. The mobile complexes have classrooms, teachers' rooms and preparation rooms as well as sanitary facilities.
Costs for teaching and learning materials
The city is spending 1.6 million euros on textbooks, exercise books, photocopies and calculators this year. The learning materials for the 39 municipal primary schools cost 422,719 euros, for the 12 secondary schools 355,235 euros, for the seven grammar schools 374,649 euros, for the Chemnitz school model 28,521 euros, for ten special schools 102,444 euros, seven vocational schools 319,545 euros and for evening secondary schools/grammar schools 16,840 euros.
School transport
School-age children who have their main place of residence in Saxony and attend a school in Chemnitz are entitled to school transport. The application is valid for several years, with the exception of journeys to vocational schools and special transport services. Here, an annual application is required. Eligible persons are reimbursed for travel by public transport or private vehicle for a maximum of ten months per school year at a monthly rate of 50 per cent of the cheapest fare. Application forms for reimbursement are available from schools, the city and at www.chemnitz.de. In 2020 alone, the city will cover travel costs totalling 1.9 million euros for 8860 pupils.
As the Heinrich Heine Primary School, Klaffenbach Primary School and Weerth Secondary School are due to be renovated, 585 pupils alone will have to be transported to their interim learning locations by school bus from 19 August 2019.
