Public participation in the further development of the Chemnitz zoo successfully launched

Ten members of the public and members of the parliamentary groups' Tierpark working group came together yesterday to discuss the future design of the Tierpark. In a constructive discussion, it became clear that the further development of the zoo is viewed from very different perspectives. The focus is on family-friendliness, the integration of the needs of the disabled, sustainability and good integration into the neighbourhood.

The first concrete result is that the signposting on the way to the zoo is to be modernised in order to provide better orientation. Work is also already underway to improve the signage in the zoo itself. The zoo management reported that there have already been many positive changes, e.g. to paths and some enclosures. In future, better information will be provided about this and also about the outstanding work in the area of species conservation. Mayor Miko Runkel explained the traffic concept for the area, which is already being worked on. Solutions need to be developed for this as part of an overall concept. A long-term process is therefore to be expected.

Another topic is the current catering facilities in the zoo. Various suggestions have been put forward to bring about a positive change. These are now being examined by the City of Chemnitz for feasibility.

Background to the public participation:
The adopted masterplan was drawn up with experts and a working committee of all parliamentary groups of the city council during the last legislative period. The plan provides a framework for how the zoo should develop. Citizen participation is intended to ensure that the ideas of the citizens are incorporated into the step-by-step realisation in order to increase the attractiveness of the facility.

Citizens were invited to apply to participate in the working group.
