Poster exhibition "Umbruch Ost. Living environments in transition"
Exhibition opening: 22 September, 6 pm, Adult Education Centre at TIETZ
On Tuesday, 22 September at 6 pm, the poster exhibition "Umbruch Ost. Lebenswelten im Wandel" will open at the adult education centre in the TIETZ. It highlights 30 years of German reunification and the changes in East Germany. The exhibition centres on the upheavals and new beginnings experienced by East Germans since 1990.
The historian Dr Stefan Wolle, who designed the exhibition, will speak at the opening. He is the director of the DDR Museum Berlin and has been researching the history of the GDR for decades. After his talk, there will be an opportunity to share personal experiences and look back in conversation. The adult education centre invites all interested parties. Admission is free.
Due to the limited number of places, registration is required at www.vhs-chemnitz.de or 0371 4884343.
On 23 panels with pictures and texts, the exhibition focuses on the expectations and trust that East Germans associated with reunification. It recalls the solidarity and willingness to help within Germany. The posters tell of new beginnings and new departures, as well as the will to come to terms with the SED dictatorship. They document the despair that accompanied the economic collapse and the rise in unemployment as well as the experiences of loss and fears that characterised the 1990s in East Germany. Themes include the simultaneous redevelopment and demolition of East German cities, the situation of women and families, and a youth culture caught between techno, punk and right-wing radicalism. The show presents contemporary images by renowned photographers such as Daniel Biskup, Paul Glaser, Harald Hauswald and Ann-Christine Jansson.
The publishers of "Umbruch Ost. Lebenswelten im Wandel" is organised by the Bundesstiftung Aufarbeitung and the Federal Government Commissioner for Eastern Germany. The exhibition will be shown in over 1,000 cities and municipalities across Germany and can be seen in Chemnitz until 18 December 2020 during the opening hours of the VHS.
The exhibition opening is a cooperation between the Evangelisches Forum Chemnitz and the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre.
